My (Short) Week In Food (2/6 to 2/12)

Thursday February 10th:

On Thursday, I didn’t do anything spectacular in the food department. However, on the beer front, I had a delicious Pocket Wrench IPA by Industrial Arts Brewing. I didn’t realize until my trip to the package store that it now comes in 12 oz cans rather than 16 oz cans. However, it comes in a six pack rather than a four pack – a much better value for the beer connoisseur on a budget.

As far as taste goes, it is a citra hopped IPA with a smooth finish. Clearly the recipe is refined to the proper proportions. It pours in a beautiful hazy, slightly cloudy light orange color. One can almost tell exactly how it is going to taste before even taking a sip. And it tastes wonderfully.

Friday February 11th:

On Friday, I went out to a late lunch with a friend – technically my mother – at Geronimo’s in New Haven, CT. We started off with drinks – I got a margarita; my mother got a glass of wine. The house margarita was wonderful. It featured a sour mix – lime juice, agave – made by our waiter Jamie, who was also the bartender. The mix blended subtly with the natural flavor of the tequila used. It was the perfect refreshment for an unusually warm February day.

For our entrees, I got the mahi-mahi tacos – also one of Jamie’s favorites – and my mother got a mushroom burrito. The tacos were wonderful as usual – they’re my go-to on the menu. While the ingredients stayed the same – pickled cabbage, cilantro, pico de gallo – the presentation had changed. They used to be served in miniature metal trays but were now served open-faced. The mahi-mahi (or dolphin) was delicious. Rather than breading the fish, it is pan fried, and goes down nice and tender.

As for the service, our waiter was excellent. As I said before, he was managing both the bar and the floor at the same time. Yet, he was attentive and accommodating, and directed me and my mother to excellent happy hour specials. For my second drink, I got a cucumber margarita which was light and refreshing in a completely different way than the first.

Overall, while my dining “week” was short, it was definitely a case of quality over quantity. I can highly recommend both the beer and a stop at Geronimo’s in New Haven. Especially if it’s happy hour, and Jamie is serving you. A+
